The Hero Inside

“… I don’t have to go anywhere to find my higher calling, I just… needed to find the hero inside myself.” – Lois Lane, Smallville S9E20

(Smallville S9E18)

It’s not easy living in this world if you have no direction, if you don’t know where or how to lead your life. Some are contented with what they have and don’t ask questions – which is fine or even better in a sense. But others, like me, need to know why we exist. And we will not feel useful without having a clear purpose in life.

Many times when I search for life’s meaning, I get lost. I don’t even know where to start. I guess this is normal. When it’s not clear right away, it’s not going to be easy reaching the answer. But let’s not look outwards like asking what this world can offer me? Or what can this society provide me?

In those famous words of John F. Kennedy: Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country. As well as those of Mahatma Gandhi: Be the change you want to see in the world.

It all begins from us and from within us. You don’t have to go anywhere else to make a change. You don’t have to do something spectacular in order to do good deeds. You don’t have to change others lives so drastically in order to feel fulfilled.

Don’t judge how trivial any deed is. Don’t judge how insignificant any event is. Don’t judge, period.

Start with your own backyard. Start with your own environment. Start with your own community. But most importantly, start with yourself.

A wise man named Lee once told me, if you don’t have a purpose of your own, then follow those whose purpose you aspire to. Follow those with a higher purpose that you can help make a difference. Follow those who will make you a better person.

But the first step would be, to find the hero inside yourself and then let it out. Whatever we do at each and every moment will have an impact in another moment, be it in the next minute, the next hour or even the next year. Therefore, be the best that you can be in every second because it’s going to come back full circle.

It’s not easy. It can be tiring. I can tell you now I have failed many times even with this knowledge. But at least I am aware.

I want to be the hero that not only touches the lives of others, but improve them even. I want to be the hero that doesn’t shy away from challenges but face them head on no matter how daunting the situation. I want to be the hero that is always ready to reach for a higher calling. It all begins within us. As long as we are ready, we’re in a better position to be.

And the best thing is, we are already who we want to be. Jewel Kilcher puts it very beautifully.

“A star is a star, it doesn’t have to try to shine. Water will fall. A bird knows just how to fly.
You don’t have to tell a flower how to bloom, or light how to fill up a room…
And dark is dark, so the stars have a place to shine. The tide goes out so it can come back another time.

Gravity is gravity, it doesn’t try to pull you down. Stone is stone, it can’t help but hold it’s ground.
The wind just blows, though you can’t see. It’s everywhere like I’ll always be.

You already are what you are, and what you are is beautiful…
Everything I hoped to be, I already am.”

Here’s to living a life with no regrets, to living a life with good intentions, and to be the hero that we can be; every single day of every single week.
