American Mall

This was playing in the flight from Dubai to Istanbul, and I just jumped at it once I saw the name Nina Dobrev.
However, the movie wasn’t good, but just as expected. The story was a typical teen drama with a boy and a girl. The only thing more from this was that it was a musical. Unfortunately, the vocals weren’t good and the dances were unimpressive and cheesy – sometimes they were trying to be a boyband and that was the worst.
But being produced by the same people as High School Musical, and this went straight to DVD too, I don’t think I should complain.
I don’t know if the actors sang their own parts but nevertheless, the vocals for Nina Dobrev’s character (I’m suspecting it was someone else’s vocals) did not suit Dobrev’s talking voice at all; especially when she was singing at a higher octave, there was a certain sandy quality about it that was very distracting. But if it really was hers, then good job to her for being able to pull it off.
Story progression had no pacing, and the characters came off as idiots when the drama mattered (reminded me of Glee and how bad that was too). But then again, this wasn’t a movie about the drama, the focus were more of the song and dance. And since those were bad, there really was nothing good about this movie (except for Dobrev).
