Group Round

A little late for this rant but I’ve been wanting to do it since last week. However, it wasn’t important enough to garner my time so only now am I ranting about it.
American Idol, after 8 seasons, they still have the ridiculous Group Round during Hollywood week. Really, what’s the point? OK, I can see why it is there. The tension build-ups, the breakdowns, the emotions and the drama all make for great television fodder.
But, what’s the point? It’s so unprofessional of the producers and the judges. They are looking for the next best solo singer in America and yet they put those poor kids who don’t know any better together and watch them fail. Sure, some work together fine; but those who can’t, no matter how great a singer they are, their fate is in the hands of their group mates. And that’s just ridiculously unfair.
The judges always stress that they are looking for the next best singer and yet, the Group Round is there to do the exact opposite of that.
I’m not ranting because I feel for the contestants or one of my favourites is out because of Group Round. No, this eighth season there isn’t a single one I’ve seen so far that I care for. Maybe the handicapped guy but that’s just to see if the Americans will accept him or how far they will propel him in this competition. But honestly, those who are making it to the top 24 just don’t strike a chord with me. I guess I’m just growing out of it but I’ll admit it still piques my interest every week.
But bottom line, American Idol is just messed up and wrong. It’s just not a purely singing competition but more on entertainment. And yet, I continue to watch it even though sometimes I do question myself why.
