The Unrealistic Loan

Actually, there’s something to write about.

Jiyung and I had a small disagreement earlier today. Started after I’ve watched the musical Once which he so highly recommended. To him it was one of the best movies but I found a part that I didn’t like.

The guy and the girl walked into a bank to get a loan. The girl did all the talking. She played a song that the guy composed and sang, and using that she convinced the banker to approve a two thousand pound loan, at least – a leap of faith that the guy will become a famous singer/songwriter. How was he even going to make the monthly repayments?

Background of the guy, he lives with his father in a small house. He has no money. He works for his father in very small vacuum repair shop. He sings his songs in the streets earning pennies.

Now the argument is that there is no bank I know that would approve such a loan without collateral but Jiyung believes otherwise, saying smaller banks in European countries do so to help those in need.

Any takers?

    Let’s clarify: -

Del says it is IMPOSSIBLE to get a loan without collateral. He says there are NO FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS out there in the world which will give out a personal loan of 2,000 quid to an inspiring musician who has a job fixing vacuum cleaners (I did not specifically say help the needy, Del).

I say it is possible, though small a chance. In the movie, through that small window of chance – and witty humour, the loan was approved. I call that an inspirational moment.

However, unless the remotest possibility of having such a loan approved is proven to Del, this ‘inspirational moment’ is to him, the moment which ruined the entire movie.

Anyway, whether or not you agree on the existence of such a loan, I recommend this movie/musical to you – whoever you are. Once.

Oh and in addition to the above, I wish to clarify further on the background of the guy in question (from the movie): -

    1. It is untrue to say that he has no money, from he movie, it is more fair to say that he might not have substantial savings, but he does earn his income from the shop.

    2. It is untrue to say that he lives in a small house, the size of his house was never shown in full. Del, you’re obviously trying to mislead readers here.

    3. It is stated clearly in the movie that he does NOT sing in the streets to earn pennies for his living. He is a struggling musician, NOT a homeless musician.
