Sorby
By Delrondu | Info17 Aug 2007
I just received the alumni magazine from Sheffield University yesterday with Eddie Izzard on the cover. (He was back to receive an honorary doctorate as they threw him out back in the 1980s but this is beside the point.)
I came across this article which I’m sure all my Sheffield friends will find… amusing.
Apart from the city centre “undergoing a dramatic process of change and development”, so is the students’ “sorry” halls of residence – inside joke where the road sign pointing to Sorby Hall had the word “Sorby” creatively changed to “Sorry”.
The article reads:

Sorby’s date with destiny
A controlled explosion demolished the 12-storey Sorby building on 27 August 2006. The block had provided accomodation for thousands of students since it was opened in 1963. The demise of Sorby is one element of the ‘Student Village’ redevelopment scheme, which also includes the demolition of Earnshaw and Ranmoor Halls of Residence, together with Wolfson Flats and Woodvale Flats. WHen the project is completed in 2009, a total of 3,540 new study-bedrooms will be in place – 2,360 on the Endcliffe site and 1,180 on the Ranmoor site.
A video of the demolition is available to view on our website: visit www.sheffield.ac.uk/alumni and follow the links to the Latest News section.

Video here, if you’re interested enough. It’s quite a funny video honestly. The editing is poorly done. Looked like something from a cheap British comedic drama or something. No, wait, the way it’s edited, it’s actually a very funny video. This is how not to shoot a video.
